Guns and VLS should be complementary magazines

Varied ammunition gives naval guns flexibility alongside VLS, with Italian gun development illustrating how the two magazines can complement one another.

Notes

Before vertical launch systems, the naval gun was a flexible weapon because crews could choose high-explosive, armour-piercing, illumination, and other rounds. Guns retained that versatility after missiles arrived. The argument here is that reduced investment in ammunition and mounting options encouraged navies to treat VLS as the only adaptable system. Developing both magazines would let guns and missiles cover complementary roles. Italian investment in OTO Melara 76 mm and 5-inch ammunition supplies the main example, alongside mention of the BAE 57 mm gun and Bofors 40 mm family. That ammunition development helps explain the dense and varied gun batteries on Italian surface combatants.
