Gunnery readiness depends on designing a ship to be cleaned

Interwar battleship training connected frequent gun drill with cleaner explosives and internal arrangements that made the ship easier to restore afterward.

Notes

Peacetime battleships had to fire their guns regularly enough to keep crews proficient. Interwar Royal Navy gunnery improved after Victorian-era problems and experience with the battlecruiser fleet drove officers toward frequent gun drill. Cleaner explosives made repeated practice less punishing to the ship, while improved cleaning methods helped crews recover from it. Maintainability depends on physical access: spaces and fittings must be arranged so sailors or machines can reach and clean them.
