Grillo's tracks attacked harbor barriers

The Grillo-class motor torpedo boats used tracked chains to cross harbor obstructions and reach Austro-Hungarian anchorages with torpedoes.

Notes

Grillo-class torpedo boats used chain tracks to cross sandbanks, booms, and other defenses around Austro-Hungarian bases. Crossing sandbanks at low tide could open an approach unavailable to an ordinary boat and help attackers reach ships inside the anchorage. Trials showed that the chains could carry the boats over obstructions. In action, their noise compromised surprise and allowed defenders to man guns. The design therefore solved the physical crossing problem while creating a serious tactical limitation.
