G. R. G. Worcester served in the Royal Navy and spent decades in the Chinese Maritime Customs Service. As a river inspector he helped survey, mark, and open the Yangtze to steam navigation as far as 1,450 miles from the sea. Worcester developed a close interest in Chinese boatmen and their craft, taking photographs and spending eight years on field research. He was released from ordinary duties so he could travel, sketch, and write about boats, people, and customs in places often inaccessible to foreigners. After retirement he supervised a collection of Chinese junk models for the Science Museum in South Kensington and built some models himself.
