How useful would a Great Lakes reserve fleet be for Canada, and how much longer would its ships last?
Short answerPotentially useful, provided treaties allow it and Canada funds access, support infrastructure, and icebreaking.
NotesThe Great Lakes are considered a potentially useful place for Canadian reserve ships, but treaty restrictions would have to be checked. Ice could delay getting the ships out when needed. Storing an icebreaker with them is suggested as a possible answer to that difficulty. Access for ships of a useful size also needs attention, along with investment in infrastructure. No estimate of the extra service life from storage there is provided.
