Chapter ยท 39:32-41:18

Grafton's Gallipoli conversion survives a torpedo

Grafton exchanged her 9.2-inch guns for 6-inch weapons and anti-torpedo bulges, then survived a 1917 UB-43 torpedo hit without casualties.

Notes

Grafton's 9.2-inch guns were removed to arm monitors M23 and M28 before the cruiser was redirected toward bombardment work. Two 6-inch weapons replaced them and anti-torpedo bulges widened the hull. The added protection cost four knots of speed. When UB-43 torpedoed Grafton in 1917, the bulges limited damage sufficiently for her to reach Malta under her own power without casualties.
