British intelligence was confident that German surface raiders were at sea, but their identities and distribution remained uncertain. A vessel believed to be Graf Spee might instead have been Admiral Scheer or Deutschland. The similarity between the sister ships made sightings difficult to assign to a particular raider. A northern sighting did not establish whether one or both ships were operating there, and a southern sighting left the same uncertainty. Each report therefore allowed several possible German deployments, complicating the British search.

Similar German raiders complicate British identification
Similar sister ships left British planners unsure which raider had been sighted and whether the German ships were operating together or in different oceans.
