Britain resists Graf Spee's intended psychological pressure

News of Graf Spee's attacks failed to provoke the expected British overreaction, while each sinking supplied clues for the hunt.

Notes

German calculations overestimated how quickly news of attacks would reach Britain and how strongly public opinion would react. Even Churchill's War Cabinet account credited Graf Spee with fewer sinkings than the ship had achieved. The Royal Navy moved additional cruisers and hunting groups south without introducing a convoy system there in response. Each reported attack also gave the hunters another clue to the raider's movements. The campaign therefore drew British warships toward Graf Spee without producing the intended overreaction.
