Graf Spee's proposed disguise aimed to make her resemble an American heavy cruiser at a distance. American cruisers also carried triple-gun turrets, providing a point of resemblance. The single funnel and an apparent third turret, supplied by a dummy, added to the resemblance. Together, these features were meant to change the broad silhouette on which a distant observer would base an identification.
