Why Graf Spee was trapped after the River Plate

Once Graf Spee entered the River Plate, geography and the approaching Renown-Ark Royal force left almost no viable escape.

Notes

The German ship could not outrun the cruisers waiting outside and gained little by moving farther upriver toward Buenos Aires. Renown and Ark Royal were closing fast enough to bring heavy guns, Skua dive bombers, and Swordfish torpedo bombers into action. Britain had shown it would violate neutrality when strategic necessity demanded it, so sanctuary offered limited protection. Graf Spee also had a less visible endurance problem because British fire had damaged her desalination plant, leaving the machinery short of fresh water. Geography, the approaching hunter force, and degrading machinery together made a successful breakout increasingly unlikely.
