Gotland could carry six Hawker Osprey seaplanes, with capacity for eight, to extend Swedish reconnaissance across the Baltic. Rough weather damaged exposed aircraft and made the aviation arrangement increasingly impractical as suitable replacements disappeared. Its sighting of Bismarck during the German breakout was reported to Swedish headquarters and intercepted by the British, helping set the Allied pursuit in motion. Conversion to an anti-aircraft cruiser in 1944 shows how quickly the value of a specialized aviation-cruiser layout could fade when its aircraft component became obsolete.
