Russia landed 1,800 men and six guns from nine merchant vessels on 22 April. The local levy had received at most a day of preparation, and many men lacked firearms, so it surrendered without fighting on 23 April. The occupiers entered Visby and retained Swedish officials in their posts apart from the governor. Two Swedish ships of the line began a blockade on 12 May, and a larger naval relief expedition brought troops to the island. The Russians capitulated to the navy before the Swedish land force completed its march. The occupation led to the Gotland National Conscription in 1811. A Swedish ship of the line present before the original landing could have destroyed or compelled the surrender of the merchant convoy.
