Why Russia built the Gorshkov frigates

Project 22350 fills gaps left by aging Russian surface combatants, including Udaloy and Sovremenny types. Its frigates take on some presence functions once associated with larger destroyers, making their appearance and visible capability part of the requirement. Soviet-era shipyards, infrastructure and the experience of their personnel continue to influence the design. Renaming a state does not remove the practices learned by generations of shipbuilders.
