Gorshkov frigates and the cost of eliminating fleet slack

Russia's newer frigates inherit cruiser work from ageing large ships, while tight fleet numbers make maintenance disruptions compound.

Notes

Admiral Gorshkov-class ships are heavily armed and become cruisers by default because Russia’s larger diplomatic flagships are old and difficult to sustain. Their practical quality still depends on maintenance and shipboard leadership, not just weapons packed into the hull. The example leads into a readiness lesson: reducing hull numbers removes slack, so an accident or delayed refit forces later deployments and maintenance to move. Deferred work then expands, refits lengthen, and the disruption compounds because no spare ship exists to absorb it. A fleet designed only around the ideal schedule will create slack by breaking that schedule when reality intervenes.
