After British relining, the Norwegian-built guns fired a 420-pound (190 kg) projectile at a quoted muzzle velocity of 2,900 feet per second (884 m/s). At 7,000 meters, the stated penetration was just over 220 mm of armor, about 8.7 inches. The protected core included a 7-inch belt and 8-inch armor on the turrets and barbettes, along with deck, conning-tower, and bulkhead protection. The enormous anti-torpedo bulges sat outside that armor and required removal of the original submerged torpedo tubes.
