Compact dimensions hid enormous torpedo bulges

At 5,838 tons and about 94 metres long, the class paired a five-metre draught with anti-torpedo bulges that widened its beam to 22.43 metres.

Notes

The Gorgon class had unusual hull proportions. At deep load the ships displaced 5,838 tons, measured roughly 94 metres long, and drew about five metres of water. The underlying hull was about 17 metres across, while the bulges increased the full beam to 22.43 metres. That meant roughly 2.7 metres of added breadth on each side, providing substantial protection against torpedoes. The combination retained the shallow draught needed for coastal work while devoting a striking amount of width to survivability.
