Armament arranged for a fjord fight

Gorgon’s single 9.2-inch and six-inch mounts gave it useful arcs of fire in confined waters where manoeuvre was limited.

Notes

The episode uses the class's gun layout to explain why a seemingly old-fashioned arrangement could make sense in Norwegian fjords. A single 9.2-inch gun stood at each end, with four single six-inch guns arranged so that three could bear forward, aft, or on either broadside. The 9.2-inch weapons made any contemporary cruiser cautious, while the six-inch guns could engage moving targets rapidly. Wing-mounted secondary guns were valuable because a ship fighting between islands might face threats from several directions without room to turn freely. Larger twin mounts would have increased cost, length, and internal volume without necessarily improving the number of targets the ship could engage in confined water. The layout was therefore a deliberate response to fjord geography rather than a careless survival of older practice.
