Golden shots do not settle battleship comparisons

A weaker battleship can win a particular engagement, but repeated outcomes better reveal the advantages built into armour, firepower, and speed.

Notes

Littorio, Bismarck, or another opponent could defeat Lion through a fortunate hit or an unusual tactical sequence. Repeating simulated engagements hundreds of times reveals the underlying balance more reliably than an isolated result. Lion's advantage appears in the distribution of outcomes: heavy armour absorbs punishment, the 16-inch guns offer useful reach, and 30-knot speed helps choose the engagement. Chance remains important, especially if Lion fails to spot first or closes into the most dangerous range of 18-inch shells. Repeated trials distinguish what can happen from what usually happens.
