Losing Goeben could reshape Gallipoli and the Grand Fleet

Without Goeben in Ottoman service, the warning bombardment of the Dardanelles may disappear and a later Gallipoli campaign could be cancelled or meet less-prepared defences.

Notes

The shell-reform trigger creates strategic consequences beyond ammunition. Without Goeben strengthening Ottoman naval power in the Black Sea, the British have less reason to bombard the Dardanelles on 3 November 1914. The forts may therefore miss the warning that historically encouraged stronger preparation before the main Allied campaign. Gallipoli could be cancelled, attempted under different conditions, or mounted against less-prepared defences. These remain branches rather than certainties, including the uncomfortable possibility that a successful operation would make Churchill appear a strategic genius.
