What if Goeben and Breslau had joined the Adriatic fleet?

A compact counterfactual asks how the Mediterranean balance changes if the German ships turn toward Austria-Hungary instead of the Ottoman Empire.

Notes

The counterfactual sends the German battlecruiser Goeben and light cruiser Breslau to Austria-Hungary instead of the Ottoman Empire in August 1914. They would have added modern speed and firepower while Italy remained neutral. German spares and maintenance support would also have been easier to provide in Austria-Hungary than in Ottoman Turkey, and the ships may have remained formally in German service. The French and Royal navies, already responsible for containing the Adriatic, would then have faced a stronger and more complicated local force. This outcome was not inevitable. It illustrates how the ships' destination could alter force allocation across the Mediterranean before Italy entered the war.
