Glorious and the consequences of inadequate escort

HMS Glorious is better understood as a failure to provide escort and airborne warning than as a case from which shipboard repair practice can be learned.

Notes

Glorious lacked the full escort expected for a carrier. A better protected force with aircraft airborne might have detected Scharnhorst and Gneisenau in time for a Swordfish attack and intervention by nearby British heavy ships or destroyers. That alternative remains a counterfactual, although the presence of other British forces is central to the argument. Once the lightly protected conversion faced concentrated fire from eighteen 11-inch guns, the crew had little opportunity to contain the damage. The case concentrates on avoiding that tactical exposure through escort and reconnaissance.
