The Royal Navy envisaged roughly 24 capital ships divided among home, Mediterranean, and eastern responsibilities. Atlantic and Indian Ocean duties required mobile ships to cover distant imperial interests, while the Mediterranean force could concentrate on battleships and reinforce the other fleets. One proposed reconstruction places all four G3s at the Eastern Fleet's core for roughly 16 to 20 years. Their dimensions suited overseas dock facilities that would be enlarged later than the home dockyards. That delay made a long useful life within the existing infrastructure especially important.
