Chapter · 12:10-17:37

A growing and varied world fleet of flight decks

Carrier aviation is not disappearing: navies are fielding full carriers, helicopter ships, and amphibious flight decks sized for very different missions.

Notes

The size survey shows how many contemporary aviation ships remain in service and how differently navies employ them. It distinguishes full carriers from LHDs, with examples including Japan's converting helicopter destroyers, the Juan Carlos design, American amphibious ships, and Mistral-class vessels. Spanish and French designs used by several countries show how aviation-ship concepts spread even when national roles differ. The comparison between the workmanlike Oliver Hazard Perry class and the Littoral Combat Ship makes the procurement point clear: a new design can be useful yet still fail as a replacement for the capability a fleet removed. Labels and displacement alone can hide each navy's operational needs.
