Chapter · 9:16-11:29

Glen-class landing-craft capacity and evolving davits

HMS Glenroy's plans show how stacked LCAs, derrick-handled LCMs, and revised davits increased the craft carried by a large infantry ship.

Notes

Plans for HMS Glenroy and the Glen class show numerous Landing Craft Assault (LCAs) stacked along the ship, with far fewer Landing Craft Mechanised (LCMs) handled separately. The stated fit of twelve LCAs and two derrick-hoisted LCMs does not perfectly match the plan, which appears to show three LCMs and more assault craft. The discrepancy likely reflects successive wartime conversions rather than a single fixed arrangement. Improved davits eventually let the ships stack and carry more LCAs, making launch gear a direct limit on amphibious capacity.
