A more pragmatic ocean-going cruiser

The Giuseppe Garibaldi design paired useful range and protection with better battery concentration, although true standardization remained elusive.

Notes

The Giuseppe Garibaldi class was a more pragmatic ocean-going cruiser than the early French ships. Its roughly twenty-knot speed, 5,500-nautical-mile range, and substantial belt armour supported a credible independent operating role. Ten to fourteen six-inch guns concentrated much of the secondary battery in one calibre. Yet alternative single ten-inch or twin eight-inch main mountings and several smaller weapons still imposed ammunition and maintenance complexity. The Italian Giuseppe Garibaldi's loss to Austro-Hungarian submarine U-4 also connects the design discussion to the hazards of its actual Mediterranean service.
