Chapter ยท 14:11-25:53

Setting a conventional 1980 GIUK Gap war

A conventional GIUK Gap conflict in 1980 fixes the leaders, available technology, and limits of the hypothetical war.

Notes

The hypothetical Cold War naval conflict is fixed in 1980 and must remain conventional. The date determines the Soviet and American leaders as well as which ships and weapons are available. Brezhnev and Jimmy Carter belong to that setting, while later 1980s weapon systems do not. The exercise examines what could happen under those conditions, with assumptions about how the leaders would act. Its public-source boundary also excludes unreleased intelligence material.
