The new Gibraltar craft have welcome speed and manoeuvrability, though slightly larger boats could carry a 40 mm forward weapon instead of relying on machine guns. Buying additional guns alongside the Type 31 programme could give the squadron a more credible response to confrontations with Spanish vessels. The trade-off is between a visible, agile presence and stronger armament.
