Gibraltar joined protected water with accessible repair docks

Four docks, smaller slips, and direct approaches behind the moles made Gibraltar more than a fortified anchorage.

Notes

The Gibraltar plan places four docks and smaller slips behind the moles and connected to a sheltered basin. The approaches from the basin to the three main docks are comparatively direct, reducing the ship-handling problem seen at some home yards. The new and detached mole works enlarged the protected waterfront around them. Those facilities turned the fortress harbour into a repair base able to support the fleet at the entrance to the Mediterranean. Fortification, harbour works, and dock access all served the same strategic station.
