Getting lost aboard museum ships and vessels under construction

Personal examples contrast clearly marked museum routes with the hazards of finding a way through an unfinished ship under construction.

Question

What was the most lost you have ever been aboard a ship?

Short answer

Museum ships were manageable. During a childhood visit to a vessel under construction, the light from nearby welding work provided the route back out.

Notes

Museum ships are usually well marked for finding an exit, although their tour routes can still loop back confusingly when a visitor seeks an unusual compartment. Dr. Clarke recalls being sent to inspect something aboard a ship his naval-architect father was building when he was about six or seven. He moved between metal sections until welding-torch light warned that he had entered the wrong working space. The anecdote shows how an unfinished hull differs from a visitor-ready ship: routes, boundaries, and hazards may not yet be obvious, especially to someone moving without a guide line.
