German and British 90,000-ton fast battleships

Two hypothetical 90,000-ton battleships converge on sixteen 16.5-inch guns but favor different protection schemes and engagement ranges.

Notes

The 1944 game exercise pairs a German fast battleship with a British opponent under the same 90,000-ton allowance. Hull structure alone consumes a substantial part of that displacement before weapons and protection are added. Both designs end up with sixteen 16.5-inch guns. The German proposal combines a 20-inch belt with a turtleback protection scheme, while the British Armageddon uses all-or-nothing protection and a thicker deck. The British design also claims a faster rate of fire and a small range advantage. The assessment favors the German ship in a close-range engagement and the British ship at longer ranges, with the first critical hit potentially deciding the fight. The judges split the result because either design could win under the right engagement conditions.
