Chapter ยท 22:41-24:14

German raiders face unequal disguise problems

Purpose-built Deutschland-class raiders struggled to conceal a distinctive and arguably ill-matched warship design, while merchant conversions hid weapons naturally.

Notes

Deutschland-class commerce raiders could alter their outlines, but their distinctive warship shape demanded extensive work to imitate another cruiser. Their design also fit commerce raiding poorly: they were too slow to avoid many threats, while 11-inch guns supplied power that a cruiser raider did not necessarily need. Admiral Graf Spee repeatedly changed her silhouette to resemble American cruisers and borrow a safer identity. Auxiliary cruisers began with merchant hulls, so they could conceal weapons behind an ordinary civilian appearance with much less effort.
