Would LHDs be useful for the German Navy?
Short answerOnly as part of a funded expeditionary task group beyond the Baltic; without escorts and supporting forces, an LHD would duplicate shore-based options.
NotesGermany can already conduct much Baltic maneuver from shore, reducing the need for a ship built to carry aircraft and landing forces into that confined theater. An LHD with F-35Bs becomes more useful only when the navy intends to operate beyond the Baltic. That choice requires escorts and a full task-group structure rather than a single conspicuous hull. The British difficulty in protecting both carrier and amphibious groups illustrates how escort shortages can make nominal amphibious capacity unavailable in practice.
