German gunnery documents and the work of intelligence interpretation

Jellicoe compared German gunnery papers and tactical orders with battle experience before making long-range practice a Grand Fleet priority.

Notes

German gunnery-practice papers placed considerable emphasis on long-range shooting. Fleet tactical orders recovered by the Russians from Magdeburg suggested a preference for fighting at medium range, so the documents required careful interpretation. Jellicoe weighed those papers against the Falklands and Dogger Bank actions, where German ships had been willing and able to fight at long range. The evidence persuaded him to make long-range practice a Grand Fleet priority. His later account also emphasized Germany's larger ammunition allowance for practice and the intelligence showing that it was being used effectively.
