Would diesel machinery solve Germany's fleet fuel problem?

Could Germany afford to fuel and operate its planned large fleet?

The answer is doubtful; H-39's diesel machinery would help without making the entire programme affordable.

Operating costs remain a constraint after the ships have been built. Diesel propulsion offers some relief for the projected battleships. It does not establish that Germany could sustain the whole fleet envisaged on paper.
