What machinery and armament would suit a German 5,000-ton light cruiser?
Short answerThree twin 5.9-inch turrets, combined diesel and steam machinery, mine capability, and as many broadside torpedo tubes as displacement permits.
NotesThis design fills the large-escort role that oversized German destroyers handled poorly. Three twin 5.9-inch turrets provide a compact cruiser battery, while mine capacity and numerous torpedoes preserve German preferences for offensive surface warfare. Combined diesel and steam machinery supplies efficient cruising range as well as high-speed power. A roughly 5,000-ton hull could be built in more yards than a major cruiser and still escort fleet units into the North Atlantic. A purpose-built light cruiser could replace attempts to force destroyers into cruiser work.
