Chapter · 33:55-35:16

Moving German naval production into factories

German submarine and torpedo output needs standardised factory methods before wartime pressure forces the transition.

Notes

Submarine and torpedo production still resembles an enlarged cottage industry in 1939. Standardised factory methods could raise output earlier and reduce the disruption of a wartime transition. Germany eventually made that shift under Albert Speer after the navy moved away from Hermann Göring's Five-Year Plan apparatus. The passage makes production policy an institutional problem as well as an engineering one.
