German air-sea rescue stations in the Channel

German rescue stations and seaplanes in the English Channel show a non-combat use for maritime aircraft: recovering downed aircrew.

Notes

Germany placed floating rescue stations through the English Channel so downed airmen could reach shelter and await collection by seaplane. The stations provided accommodation, food, and basic comforts, and the system saw practical use. A refuge in the exposed Channel still offered an uncomfortable wait. Maritime aviation infrastructure also supported personnel recovery and preserved trained aircrew alongside reconnaissance, transport, and attack missions.
