German capital-ship construction bottleneck

The proposed German carrier-and-battlecruiser threat runs into a shipyard constraint: too few large hulls could be built in parallel after the First World War.

Notes

Germany's shipbuilding base limited the proposed carrier-and-battlecruiser fleet. First World War disruption had reduced the capacity needed to lay down several capital ships in parallel. The estimate given here is that Germany could normally manage only two, or perhaps three, large hulls at once and begin the next group after the previous ships left the slips. Britain had more shipbuilding infrastructure, economic backing, and capacity for simultaneous construction. Fleet design therefore depended on production throughput as well as tactical merit.
