Could modern navies use general specialists?

Could a fleet combine broadly capable ships with different primary strengths, following the gun-heavy Tribal and torpedo-heavy J and K designs?

Notes

The Tribals were gun-centered while the J and K classes gave torpedoes greater weight, yet all remained useful fleet destroyers. That contrast reversed the destroyer's original lineage from torpedo boat destroyer, in which torpedoes had defined the design and guns were added around them. The pairing raises a question for modern fleets: could complementary general specialists work better than one universal ship? The proposed compromise is a vessel suited to roughly 70 percent of tasks while guaranteeing exceptional performance in one part of that mission set. Another class could give priority to a different system.
