Four cylindrical boilers fed a vertical compound engine and a single 20-foot-6-inch two-bladed propeller. The machinery drove only one shaft, making the screw the ship's sole source of powered propulsion. A retractable funnel and a propeller that could be hoisted into the hull reduced drag when operating under sail. The three-masted ship rig was therefore a practical cruising system rather than decorative survival from an earlier era.
