The ship's planned 150 mm battery was abandoned because of weight and cost, leaving ten 105 mm guns with 807 rounds plus lighter weapons. Although the main guns had a theoretical range of 10,800 meters, a practical fighting range was probably closer to 5,000 meters. Schichau had the experience to build battleships, battlecruisers, torpedo boats, and U-boats, so the yard itself was not the limiting factor. The design gave this capable builder a cruiser whose 25 mm deck could mainly contain fragments and blast rather than stop shells from comparable guns.
