Gangut: innovative layout, limited strategic margin

The Ganguts combined speed and a twelve-gun arrangement with the disadvantages of slow Russian construction.

Notes

The Gangut design combined small-tube boilers, high speed, a twelve-gun broadside, and a one-level turret arrangement with useful fire-control possibilities. Its firing arcs also allowed a full broadside at unusually sharp angles. These were capable and innovative first-generation dreadnoughts. By the time they entered service, British Orion- and Queen Elizabeth-class ships carried much heavier guns, while Russia's long build times had consumed the Ganguts' early advantage. A sound design could still be overtaken by a faster industrial system.
