Gallipoli was disastrously organized from the opening effort to put troops ashore, yet it also became a crucible for amphibious warfare in the modern age. The heavy concentration of errors made the campaign a source from which later forces could learn. This does not minimize the losses of British, Australian, New Zealand, or other troops, but it explains why the campaign remains institutionally important.
