The Gallant or G class was intended as an improved successor to the Weapon-class destroyer. Its hull dimensions moved back toward the scale of the Tribals. The planned armament included four quick-firing 4.5-inch dual-purpose guns, numerous 40 mm weapons and two quintuple 21-inch torpedo launchers. Despite that capability, the intermediate-destroyer category had little room for a durable postwar future between smaller escorts and larger fleet ships.
