The Gabbiano was smaller than a Military-class trawler, yet it was built to naval standards with its systems designed as a coherent whole. Its standard displacement also fit within the treaty category used for torpedo boats, which affected how Italy classified the design. The corvette traded the trawler's larger gun and heavier depth-charge load for eighteen-knot speed, torpedo tubes, hydrophones, and a range of about 3,000 miles at fifteen knots. Those qualities made it better suited to deep-water escort work in the Mediterranean. Displacement alone says little about combat value because construction standards, sensors, propulsion, armament balance, and intended theater all mattered.

Gabbiano corvettes show what naval standards added
Comparing an Italian Gabbiano corvette with a larger British trawler separates purpose-built naval capability from simple displacement.
