How would a 1930s-refitted G3 fare against Bismarck?
Short answerA historical Bismarck would be badly disadvantaged, though G3 construction would probably have changed German design choices too.
NotesA refitted G3 would have much more protection than Hood and would probably carry radar. Clarke favors near-contemporary sources giving G3 nine 16.5-inch guns over modern accounts that infer 16-inch guns from Nelson and Rodney. On those assumptions, a historical Bismarck would be badly overmatched. Four completed G3s would also change treaty displacement and gun limits, creating a different design environment for Germany. Bismarck would probably need to be larger and more heavily armed in that world.
