What the unusual turret position gained and lost

The displaced third turret offered a much narrower practical firing arc than the two forward mounts, especially under peacetime blast restrictions.

Notes

The third turret's restricted arc made it less useful than it appears on a plan. In combat it might traverse through roughly 110 degrees on either side, compared with about 270 degrees for the forward turrets. Peacetime firing rules would probably narrow its usable practice arc further because blast could damage the superstructure. Routine training might therefore limit the turret to an 80- or 90-degree sector. A turret's nominal ability to bear can differ sharply from the arc in which a navy can safely train and fire it.
