The G3's middle turret continued the familiar practice of placing a heavy turret amidships. One alternative would move all three turrets forward, reverse the third mounting, and shift the superstructure aft. This could place the forward funnel more directly over its boilers instead of requiring trunking from the forward boiler room. The existing turret had generous arcs to either side but could not cover the stern and had only limited forward fire. The proposal shows how a familiar arrangement could impose engineering and operational penalties elsewhere in the ship.

Why the G3's middle turret and funnel trunking draw criticism
The G3's amidships turret preserved familiar capital-ship thinking but restricted useful arcs and forced a less direct funnel arrangement.
