What G-5 torpedo boats actually did in wartime

G-5s made several torpedo attacks, but troop transport, personnel movement, and landing escort often made better use of the difficult whaleback design.

Notes

G-5 boats attacked Finnish, German, and Romanian vessels, including a German submarine chaser near Sevastopol. In that action, tracer fire from a Romanian gunboat exposed the Soviet attackers and helped the defending force sink one G-5. The type could still deliver torpedoes effectively despite its limitations. G-5s were more often useful carrying troops and high-value personnel or escorting landing craft. Their swept whaleback deck left little room for heavier guns, so support missions often fit the hull better than conversion into a motor gun boat.
