Future US cruisers may carry another label

Will the US Navy design another classic cruiser?

It may be forced toward cruiser-sized ships by vessels such as China's Type 055, but could call them destroyers despite cruiser roles and scale.

Many large modern destroyers already perform peacetime presence and command roles historically associated with cruisers. Classification may therefore lag behind hull size and mission. China's Type 055 creates pressure for comparable American sensor, missile, command, and endurance capacity. The US Navy can recreate a cruiser in function while retaining the politically or institutionally preferred destroyer label.
